Deer root is the root of Stemmacantha carthamoides, also known as Xinjiang ginseng and safflower, which belongs to the family Asteraceae and is distributed in the northwest of Xinjiang, China.


The main components in deer grass are phytosterones, flavonoids, triterpenoid saponins and phenolic acids. Deer root has the effect of invigorating the brain and nourishing qi. It grows in the meadows and hillsides of alpine and subalpine belts. 


Scholars in the former Soviet Union have done a lot of research on the chemical composition and pharmacological effects of deer roots, and believe that the phytoecdysteroids in deer roots have adaptogenic effects similar to those of ginseng, eleuthero and pilose antler. Deer root is folkly used as a tonic to increase resistance.
