Tamarind is a plant of the family Leguminosae.

Tamarind is 6-20 meters tall; bark is dark gray with irregular splits; even-numbered pinnate compound leaves are alternate; petioles are short and stout; leaves are oblong, with blunt or slightly concave apex, nearly rounded base, and skewed , hairless on both sides, entire edge. The flowering period is from May to August; the fruiting period is from December to May of the following year. It is native to tropical Africa and likes to grow in areas with high temperatures, long sunshine, dry climate, and distinct dry and wet seasons. The pulp tastes sour and sweet and can be eaten raw or cooked, or can be used as preserves or made into various sauces and pickles; the juice plus sugar water is a good refreshing drink; the oil extracted from the seeds can be eaten. The fruit is used as medicine, as a cooling and demulcent agent, with carminative and anti-scurvy effects.
