Physical and chemical properties
Salicin is also known as "salicin" and "salicol". Molecular formula C13H18O7. Molecular weight 286.27. Colorless crystal or white powder. Melting point 199~202ºC, relative density 1.43, [α] 25-62°~-67° (in 3% solution), -45.6° (in 0.6%, absolute ethanol). Soluble in water, alcohol, alkali and glacial acetic acid, insoluble in ether and chloroform. The aqueous solution is neutral and tastes bitter. Found in willow leaves, flowers and poplar bark. It can be used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of maple and related preparations.

Function
Salicin has the effect of treating colds, fevers and infections, and reducing arthritis pain and low back pain.

Biological Activity
Salicin (Salicoside, Salicine) is an alcoholic beta-glycoside containing D-glucose. Is an anti-inflammatory agent produced by willow bark. It is a natural, non-selective inhibitor of COX1 and COX2.
