Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract is more than 50 kinds of gypenosides isolated from the plant Gynostemma pentaphyllum, which, like ginsenosides, belong to the tetracyclic triterpenoid masaponin. Jiaogulan (scientific name: Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino ) is a herbaceous climbing plant of the family Cucurbitaceae and Jiaogulan.

Distributed in China, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia (Java), New Guinea, North Korea and Japan. It grows in dense forests in valleys at an altitude of 300-3200 meters, sparse forests on hillsides, bushes or roadside grasses.
