This product is the dried root and rhizome of Valeriana officinalis L.

Valerian (Latin scientific name: Valeriana officinalis L.) Valeriana officinalis is a perennial cold-resistant, flowering, herbaceous plant, up to 120 cm tall; the rhizome is short and head-shaped, the stem is hollow, and the stem leaves are ovate to wide. Oval, corymb panicle terminal, corolla lavender or white, filaments flat, flowering and fruiting period from July to September.

Valerian is native to parts of Asia and Europe, and is cultivated in North America. Its stems and leaves are used as food by the larvae of some Lepidopteran species (butterflies and moths). The rhizome and roots of valerian are used medicinally to dispel wind, relieve spasm, and treat bruises and injuries. Also available as a dietary supplement. Valerian is macerated, ground, dehydrated and put into convenient packages such as capsules, which have sedative and anxiolytic properties. Valerian was used to make spices in the 16th century.
