Echinacea species are herbaceous, drought-tolerant perennial plants growing up to 140 cm or 4 feet in height. It is a perennial herb with slender, rough leaves arranged opposite each other on a stem and produces a single large purplish flower. Each stem bears one flower, which has a round flower disk about one inch in diameter with spiky purple chaff.
The flower head has a prominent, spiny, brown central cone that is surrounded by light purple or white petal-like rays. The flowers are approximately 12 cm across with soft, magenta-lilac petals that radiate from a central spiny, brown cone. The flowers tend to fade with age.
The leaves are lanceolate with pronounced tapered ends, roughly textured, and have long petioles. The stalk is robust and also coarsely textured.
Droopy purple-pinkish colored petals also surround the disk. The petals are mildly scented and have a slightly bitter note.
