What is azelaic acid?
Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid derived from grains such as rye, wheat and barley.
It is also not an 'acid' in the traditional sense of the word. Azelaic acid differs from resurfacing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) because it does not break down the bonds between skin cells, causing them to peel away.
What does Azelaic Acid help with?
Scarring
The rejuvenating properties of azelaic acid involve an increase in fibroblast cell activity - the precursors to collagen production - giving it the ability to reduce visible scarring caused by acne.
Hyperpigmentation
Compared to hydroquinone, a traditional prescription cream used to target dark spots, azelaic acid is more effective at treating hyperpigmentation, as it gets to work halting the overproduction of melanin in your skin.
Acne
Several trials have shown promising results that azelaic acid reduces spot-causing surface sebum and clears hair follicles when used regularly in acne treatment.
