Horny goat is a common name of the plant Epimedium sagittatum, which is native to Asia and the Mediterranean region. In the traditional Chinese medicinal system, and elsewhere, some species from the genus Epimedium have an age-old history in the management of ailments. Among these Epimedium grandiflorum, Epimedium sagittatum and others have been used to treat illnesses such as erectile dysfunction, joint pain, and fatigue. Furthermore, it has been credited with improved cardiovascular and cerebrovascular functions, antitumor and antiaging effects as well as immunomodulatory functions. Colloquially, plants from this genus, more specifically Epimedium grandiflorum, have been referred to as "horny goat " or "yin yang huo." The colloquial names are attributed to the legendary discovery of its aphrodisiac properties by a Chinese goat herder who noted an increased sexual activity in his herd after they consumed the plant's leaves. Clearly, most of the interest in this genus can be attributed to its aphrodisiac properties; however, existing literature illustrates that this genus has much more to offer.
