Description
Arachidonic acid is a 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid that is a precursor for prostaglandin synthesis. It has been shown to be an effective substrate for cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, two enzymes that are responsible for the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandins. The rate of conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins is increased when these enzymes are inhibited by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Arachidonic acid has also been shown to have effects on other enzymes such as p-nitrophenyl phosphate, which converts it into nitric oxide, and bcl-2 protein, which regulates the activity of apoptosis in cells. Arachidonic acid has been found to inhibit neuronal death and myocardial infarction in rats. |
