Hypericum perforatum (scientific name: Hypericum perforatum L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Hypericum in the family Garcinia, up to 10 cm high, and glabrous as a whole.
Distributed in Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Xinjiang, Shandong, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan and Guizhou in China. Southern Europe, Cyprus, Northwest Africa, Near East, Central Asia, India to Mongolia and Russia are also distributed. It grows on hillsides, roadsides, grasslands, forests and riversides at an altitude of 500-2100 meters.
Hypericum perforatum tastes bitter, pungent, and flat in nature, can clear away heat and detoxify, regulate menstruation and stop bleeding. Chinese folks often mash the fresh whole herb or grind the dry product into powder and apply to the affected area to treat wound bleeding, boils, swelling and poison, and burns and scalds.
The dry aerial parts of Hypericum perforatum are used as medicine. It tastes bitter, astringent, and flat in nature. It has the effects of soothing the liver and relieving stagnation, clearing away heat and dampness, reducing swelling and pain.
