Witch hazel is a small deciduous tree or shrub belonging to the Hamamelidae family. The leaves are obovate, obliquely heart-shaped at the base, densely felt underneath, and have wavy teeth on the edges. The essential oil extracted from the bark of witch hazel contains witch hazel tannins, gallic acid, volatile oils and some bitter compounds.

Pharmacological effects
The essential oil extracted from the bark of witch hazel contains witch hazel tannins, gallic acid, volatile oils and some bitter compounds. This essential oil can be used as a tonic to treat burns, sores and rashes and to relieve muscle pain.
