Purslane extract is a substance extracted from the dried whole plant of Portulacaoleracea L., a plant of the family Purslane. Purslane has a sour taste and cold nature, and enters the large intestine, liver and spleen meridians. Purslane is an annual fleshy herb distributed in most parts of the country. It grows in fields, wasteland and roadsides. The whole plant is smooth and hairless, and is 20-30cm tall. The cylindrical stem lies horizontally or diagonally upward and diverges from the base, and the sunny side is often light brown or purple; the leaves are alternate or opposite, the leaves are thick and fleshy, obovate or spoon-shaped, 1 to 3cm long, 5 to 14mm wide, with the upper leaf surface Deep red, with dark red lower leaves; the flowers are yellow and small, with 5 inverted heart-shaped petals, usually 3 to 5 clustered in the leaf axils of the branches; the brown capsule is short conical with a lobed cover. The dried whole plant is preferably small, tender, with many leaves and green.

Function
1. Antibacterial effect
Purslane ethanol extract has significant inhibitory effects on Shigella and Paradysenteriae flexneri. The water decoction can inhibit Shigella, Sonnei, Swinburni and Shigella dysenteriae. Purslane alcohol extract and water decoction can also inhibit Escherichia coli, Proteus, Typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It also has an inhibitory effect on pathogenic fungi such as Trichophyton microsporum.

2. Effect on cardiovascular system
Aqueous extracts of purslane stems and leaves can contract the rabbit aorta in a dose-dependent manner and attenuate myocardial contractility. The extract also increased blood pressure in rats. Phentolamine can counteract the arterial vasoconstriction and blood pressure boosting effects of this extract. Atropine and Cyproheptadine have no effect on its blood pressure raising effect. Propranolol can slightly reduce its blood pressure raising amplitude, while guanethidine and tetrodotoxin have no effect on its blood pressure raising effect. The blood pressure effect is not affected, but increasing the extracellular Ca2+ concentration can weaken the effect of the extract. It is suggested that purslane water extract may act on post-fusion α-receptors by blocking Ca2+ influx. Other experimental results show that fresh purslane juice and boiling water extract can increase myocardial contractility and contraction speed in a dose-dependent manner, and can be completely blocked by propranolol (2.1×10-5) mol/L.

3. Effect on smooth muscle
Purslane fresh juice and boiling water extract can increase the tension, amplitude and frequency of the isolated ileum of guinea pigs. The effect is similar to acetylcholine (Ach) in a dose-dependent manner and can be slightly blocked by atropine. The above extracts also relaxed isolated tracheal strips and were completely blocked by propranolol. It has also been reported that aqueous extracts of purslane stems and leaves can relax the colon of guinea pigs and the duodenum of rabbits in a dose-dependent manner, and phentolamine can counteract this effect.

4. Effect on skeletal muscles
The methanol, ether and water extracts and dialyzable components of Portulaca oleracea L. have a bidirectional response to rat phrenic nerve hemidiaphragm specimens, with an initial increase in twitching tension followed by long-lasting relaxation, and can significantly reduce K+ and coffee Reduces nicotine-induced abdominal muscle contracture due to the twitch/tonic ratio of the resulting contracture. The muscle relaxant nifedipine cannot attenuate the increase in twitching tension caused by the above extracts, but it can partially attenuate the abdominal muscle contraction caused by the above extracts at high concentrations. In addition, the dialysable ingredient relaxes the chick's muscles. The muscle relaxation effect of the above extract may be related to the Ca2+ in the extracellular fluid.

5. Increase blood potassium effect
For those who take a maintenance dose of gossypol 40 mg each time, add purslane extract tablets (15 tablets/day) or purslane licorice decoction (62.5 g/day). After taking the medicine, the blood potassium can be increased. Amaranth licorice decoction has significant effects. It is believed that the increase in blood potassium is directly related to the high potassium content of purslane.

6. Effect on the uterus
Fresh purslane juice or purslane extract has a contractile effect on the uterus in vitro and in vivo. When parturient women take 6 to 8 mL of fresh purslane juice orally, it can be seen that the number and intensity of uterine contractions increase. Purslane injection has obvious stimulant effects on the isolated uteri of guinea pigs, rats, and rabbits, and on the in situ uteri of rabbits and dogs. 2mL purslane injection (equivalent to 5-10g fresh purslane) has a stronger uterine contraction effect than 0.2mg ergometrine, and 4-6mL purslane injection has a similar effect to 10U pituitaryin. The water-decoction and alcohol-precipitated extract of purslane has the strongest uterine contraction effect, the acidic alcohol extract has no obvious effect, and the alkaline water-extracted alcohol precipitate has an inhibitory effect on the mouse uterus.

7. Effects on the small intestine and other effects
Purslane fresh juice and boiling water extract have a dose-dependent acetylcholine-like effect on the isolated ileum of guinea pigs. This effect is similar to the effect of prostaglandin E on intestinal smooth muscle, which increases the contraction tension, amplitude and frequency. It has also been reported that purslane water extract has an inhibitory effect on the isolated small intestine of guinea pigs. Water-soluble and fat-soluble extracts of purslane can prolong the life of some alloxan diabetic rats and rabbits, but do not affect blood sugar levels, which may be related to improving lipid metabolism disorders in animals. The omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids contained in purslane have cholesterol-lowering effects and are rich in vitamin A-like substances, which can promote the growth of epithelial cells and facilitate ulcer healing. In addition, purslane has a diuretic effect on rabbits.
