| Description Keratin is a protein that makes up your hair, skin and nails - as much as 85% of it. Pound for pound, it's stronger than steel and its resilient nature is what helps hair to hold up against daily wear and tear. However, regular heat styling, colouring and exposure to harsh environmental conditions damages the structure of the keratin proteins, which gradually makes the hair weaker and more prone to split ends. Keratin can be added to products to help reinforce the strands - but the size of the molecules are often too large to penetrate through the hair cuticles so the protein simply sits on the top of hair and doesn't actually improve the condition.
