Product Description

Platycodon extract is the dry root extract of Platycodon grandiflorum (Jacq.) A.DC., a plant of the Campanulaceae family. The main active ingredient is saponins, and it also contains flavonoids, polysaccharides and anthocyanins, fatty acids and fatty oils, trace elements and amino acids. Anthocyanins have antioxidant, free radical removal, lowering blood cholesterol levels, anti-tumor, anti-mutation and other effects. Anthocyanins have good stability, good water solubility, high content, and have the characteristics of natural pigments. Therefore, while playing a certain role in regulating physiological functions in the human body, Platycodon anthocyanins can also be used in natural foods such as food and beverages pigment.

Pharmacological effects
1. Hypoglycemic effect
Normally, 200 mg/kg of Platycodon water or alcohol extract can lower blood sugar, similar to tolbutamide. It also has a hypoglycemic effect on experimental tetrachlorpyrimidine diabetic rabbits, and can inhibit the increase in food-induced blood sugar. The decrease in liver glycogen is also restored after treatment, and the alcohol extract has a stronger effect than the water extract.

2. Expectorant and antitussive effects
Both the ethanol extract of Platycodon grandiflorum and the aqueous decoction of the root can be administered into the stomach to reduce the excretion of phenol red and have a very significant expectorant effect. Mainly because the saponins contained in it stimulate the glossopharyngeal nerve terminals when administered orally, reflexively causing hypersecretion of the respiratory tract, diluting sputum and making it easier to cough up. Platycodon D and D3 may be effective phlegm-reducing ingredients. Studies have shown that Platycodon saponin capsules have obvious anti-inflammatory, cough-relieving, asthma-relieving and expectorant effects, and have certain preventive and therapeutic effects on chronic bronchitis.

3. Anti-tumor and antioxidant effects
The petroleum ether extract of Platycodon root has antioxidant effects. The results of the tetramethylazolium salt (MTT) colorimetric test showed that the extract has anti-oxidative effects on human colorectal cancer cells HT-29, ileocecal cancer cells HRT-18, and liver cancer in vitro. Cells HepG2 all showed strong cytotoxicity. Studies have shown that Platycodon D has the activity of significantly inhibiting the proliferation of human breast cancer cells (MCF-7) and human acute promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60 cells). Its specific mechanism of action and the structure-activity relationship of platycodon saponin's anti-tumor activity remain to be further studied. Platycodon polysaccharide has the ability to scavenge hydroxyl free radicals and superoxide anion free radicals, and its scavenging ability has an obvious dose-effect relationship with the polysaccharide concentration. The polysaccharide concentration required to scavenge 50% of hydroxyl free radicals and superoxide anion free radicals is 0.06 mg/mL and 0.31 mg/mL.

4. Cholesterol lowering effect
Platycodon saponin can increase bile acid secretion, reduce cholesterol content in rat liver, and increase steroid excretion.

5. Hemolysis
Platycodon saponin has local irritation and strong hemolysis, with a hemolysis index of 887. Therefore, it can only be taken orally and cannot be used as an injection. Oral administration causes the saponins to be hydrolyzed and destroyed in the digestive tract without hemolysis. However, when taken orally in large doses, saponins can irritate the gastric mucosa and cause nausea and vomiting.

6. Antibacterial effect
Platycodon aqueous extract and decoction were diluted in test tubes at a ratio of 1:10 to inhibit Epidermophyton floccosum in vitro. Using the decoction of 4.50% on flat plates, it has inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Shigella flexneri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli.

7. Sedative, analgesic and antipyretic effects
Platycodon crude saponin has strong antipyretic and analgesic effects when administered orally to animals. Using typhoid vaccine to induce fever in mice, 50 to 100 mg/kg can be administered orally to reduce the spontaneous activity of mice and has obvious antipyretic effects. And it can last for 3 to 4 hours. It has an inhibitory effect on the writhing reaction caused by tail pressing method and intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid in mice, and can increase the pain threshold of animals. Its intensity and analgesic effect are equivalent to aspirin and aminopyrine, and it can prolong cyclohexanol. Sodium bitaline sleep time. Experiments on mice climbing ladders, acupoints, rotarods and inclined planes have proven that crude platycodon saponins have central inhibitory effects such as sedation and analgesia.

8. Inhibit gastric acid secretion and anti-ulcer effect
Platycodon crude saponin has the effect of inhibiting gastric juice secretion and resisting peptic ulcer. For rats with pylorus ligation, administration of Platycodon saponin to the duodenum can reduce gastric juice secretion and partially inhibit the activity of pepsin. Its inhibitory effect on experimental ulcers is similar to that of atropine. After the dose is increased, gastric juice secretion and the occurrence of ulcers can be completely inhibited. Continuous administration of platycodon crude saponin in rats can also reduce the occurrence of acetic acid ulcers. The methanol cold extract of Platycodon grandiflorum also has anti-ulcer effects.

9. Anti-inflammatory and immune-enhancing effects
Platycodon crude saponin has anti-inflammatory effects. Rats' oral administration of Platycodon crude saponin has significant anti-inflammatory effects on carrageenan foot swelling, cotton ball granuloma and acetic acid swelling. It can also inhibit adjuvant arthritis in rats and reduce capillary permeability in mice with allergic reactions. Studies have shown that administration of platycodon total saponins to rats can significantly increase blood levels of ACTH and corticosterone, suggesting that its anti-inflammatory effect may be related to the involvement of adrenocortical hormones. In addition, Platycodon crude saponin has a local stimulating effect on the skin, which can improve the blood circulation of inflammation, promote the improvement of inflammation and the absorption of the inflammatory process. Platycodon has an immune function-enhancing effect, and its extract can inhibit the migration of white blood cells, enhance the bactericidal power of neutrophils, and increase the activity of lysozyme; crude saponin can also enhance the phagocytic function of macrophages.

10.Other functions
Platycodon crude saponin can lower blood pressure, slow down heart rate, and inhibit respiration. Its antihypertensive effect cannot be antagonized by atropine and α and β blockers. It has anti-edema and diuretic effects on rats with congestive edema caused by bilateral jugular vein ligation. In addition, platycodon extract has anti-allergic effects.
