Product Description

Product Profile
Salina has two major characteristics: salt tolerance and β-carotene enrichment. The former determines its production method, and the latter determines its market use.

The commercial development of Salina salina began in the 1980s. As the best natural β-carotene producer, it is used in drug development, functional food, aquaculture and animal feed industries.

Salina salina is the most salt-tolerant eukaryotic organism currently known and can live in water with a salinity of 10% to 30% (saturated). In order to resist the stress of salinity, Salina salina while enriching β-carotene, Glycerin accumulates as a protective agent. Salina can tolerate temperatures of 40°C, but at high temperatures, cells will not reproduce and grow. In Salina salina, β-carotene has two isomers, trans (usually 9'-trans) and all-cis (all-trans). The ratio of these two structures is affected by multiple environmental factors, such as Light, temperature and salinity, etc. In addition to beta-carotene, Salina salina can also produce cantharidin. The reason for the production of β-carotene is still unclear. Its enrichment content is related to factors such as salinity, light, and nutrient salts. In addition to β-carotene, Salina salina also produces other common carotenoids in green algae, such as zeaxanthin, lutein, neoxanthin, violaxanthin, cryptoxanthin and α-carotene, etc. Research reports that the enrichment of zeaxanthin and the production of phytoene/phytoene can be achieved through genetic engineering.

Biological effects and applications of β-carotene
1.Natural pigments
It is generally believed that synthetic carotenoids have low bioavailability due to chemical conformation problems and may have certain toxic effects. However, the ratio of different chemical conformations of carotenoids produced from algae is more in line with biological needs. Therefore, recently, In 2007, carotenoids produced by Salina salina, as natural pigments, began to gradually replace chemically synthesized pigments and were used in beverages, food and other fields.

2. Nutrients
Beta-carotene can be metabolized into vitamin A in the body. Traditionally, beta-carotene is used as a vitamin A supplement. The efficacy of vitamin A has been widely verified, such as the synthesis of pigments required by the visual system and skin care (anti-ultraviolet). Other studies have found that it has a positive effect on protein synthesis, RNA synthesis, cell division, cell membrane stability, mucus secretion, sexual development and reproductive processes, sperm production, egg development, adrenal gland and thyroid function; as well as maintaining metabolic rate and Energy levels, body temperature and growth, skin firmness, effects on the lining of the digestive tract, bone development and remodeling, and positive effects on the liver.

3.Medical applications

Beta-carotene is also widely used in medicine.

3.1. Antioxidant: Carotenoids exist in plasma membranes (such as cell membranes and organelle membranes). When radiation occurs inside the membrane, β-carotene can play an effective antioxidant role.

3.2. Cancer: β-carotene plays a positive role in immune response and gap junction communication, both of which can prevent cancer. A large number of medical studies have found that people with higher than average serum carotene levels have a lower incidence of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The study also found that the use of chemically synthesized full-cis beta-carotene does not reduce the incidence of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The incidence of these two diseases will even increase in some groups of people (such as increasing the risk of lung cancer in smokers). More research suggests that dietary intake of natural beta-carotene can prevent such diseases.

3.3. Cardiovascular disease: Salina salina β-carotene has a significant impact on cholesterol, such as inhibiting the increase in total blood cholesterol in experimental mice; reducing the content of triglycerides in the plasma of experimental animals, together with lipid-lowering drugs (fibrate) It can be used to treat patients with hyperlipidemia; it can increase high-density (HDL) cholesterol levels in the blood of experimental mice. It can also increase HDL cholesterol levels when used together with lipid-lowering drugs (fibrates) in patients with low levels of HDL cholesterol. Therefore, Salina salina beta-carotene can reduce the incidence of atherosclerosis.

3.4. Other medical effects include: as a precursor of vitamin A, improving vision, preventing cataracts and macular degeneration; immune regulation and skin protection, liver protection, and anti-aging.
